National ID Card: Price, Requirements and Steps for Enrollment In Nigeria

Nigerian National ID

The Nigerian National ID card is a card issued by the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) containing vital information about your personality and a valid National Identity Number (NIN).

The Enrollment for the National Identity Card can be done at any NIMC center usually located around the environs of the Local Government Headquarters. In most centers, especially the ones located at the state capital, the price is usually free but some centers would choose to charge a fee of 500 naira usually for the purpose of reprinting and photocopying. So let's say you may charged less but not more than 500 naira.

Requirements For National Identity Card Enrollment (Adults)

In order to ensure a complete an successful enrollment/registration for the National Identity Card, One or two of the following items may be required of you to carry along as a proof of your identity.
Note: Unlike the Voter's card, Driver's License registration where there is an age requirement of 18years, Any Nigerian citizen can register or enroll for the National Identity Card.

  • Old National ID Card
  • Driver’s License
  • Voter’s card (Temporary or Permanent)
  • Nigerian International passport
  • Certificate of Origin
  • Attestation letter from a prominent ruler in your community
  • Birth certificate
  • Declaration of age
  • Attestation letter from religious/traditional leader
  • NHIS ID card
  • Government staff ID card
  • Registered/recognized private organization staff ID card
  • School ID Card (private/public)
  • Tax Clearance certificate
  • Valid immigration documents
  • Bank Verification Number (If available)
  • Your height (You may measure it there if you don’t know it already).
  • Look Good (So that your passport will look nice on the card)

Requirements For National Identity Card Enrollment (Minors)

  • Parent/Guardian’s National Identification Number (NIN) Slip ( father, mother or guardian’s NIN ) MUST be provided.
  • Supporting documents and evidence of proof as the Guardian to the minor (if Guardian’s NIN is used).
  • Registered Birth Certificate/ Statutory Age Declaration.
  • All minors MUST be accompanied by at least one of the parents or a Guardian.
  • Birth certificate

  • School ID Card private/Public
  • NHIS ID card
  • Nigerian passport
  • Attestation letter from a prominent ruler in the community
  • Attestation letter from religious/traditional leader

Steps for National Identity Card Enrollment

You can proceed to the steps of enrollment as far as you have gotten the required documents handy. Please Note that the steps below might not be orderly outlined due to the policies of services rendered in different enrollment centers. The steps are of two methods.

Method One


  • Visit the NIMC official website by clicking here to access the Enrollment Form Fill the Enrollment Form online with all your details and print out a summary sheet with a 2D Barcode and Registration Identification Number. 
  • Go to the enrollment center, where an enrollment officer scans the barcode to pull up your information from the database. You should verify and confirm the enrollment data on the system. 
  • Your headshot photograph, fingerprints and signature would then be captured. 
  • Submit your supporting documents for scanning. 

Your enrollment is acknowledged where two slips would be given to you. (a) Transaction Slip (b) NIN Slip indicating completion of enrollment. With everything properly done, you should not have any problems getting your identity card quickly.

Method Two

Although this method would take much of your time but it is limited to lesser form of mistakes or no mistakes because the filling on details would be done by an NIMC representative.

  • Visit The nearest enrollment center with the necessary requirements.
  • Fill the hard copy of the enrollment form given to you.
  • Submit the form to the NIMC representative.
  • Your details filled by you will be typed into the enrollment portal, Verify the details if they are correct.
  • Biometric and facial details of you will be filled in the portal, and submitted.
  • After submission, you will wait for a period of 2 weeks before you return to your enrollment center, by now a copy of a temporary slip containing you National Identity Number (NIN) will be issued to you.

Note: With this temporary slip containing your NIN, you can use it for many purpose until your national ID Card is finally released.

How Long Does It Take Before Issuance?

According to the recent update from NIMC, The National ID Issuance commences 12 months after enrollment. You can also check if your National ID card is ready for pickup
